Interior Styling Vs Architecture

In basic terms interior styling is about “dressing” a room so that it looks great and feels fresh, current but not too trendy, beautiful but livable, all while still being functional and expressing the homeowners taste.

Architects design all kinds of buildings. They design schools and skyscrapers. They design hospitals and hotels. They also design churches, train stations and plain old regular houses. Any building that is used by people was probably designed by some architect. A building that is not safely designed could catch on fire or fall down on itself. Architects have to design building so that people can escape from the building in an emergency. Of course, some emergencies, such as earthquakes or tornadoes, destroy even the safest buildings.

Stylists work largely on editorial projects, making rooms or sets look amazing for beautiful photographs that appear in magazines and catalogues. Some of them may do styling work for residential and commercial interiors too. Editorial work is no less important to the interiors industry because it is these photos which evoke the emotional reaction that makes us want to run out and buy what we see on the pages. And this is what starts trends. 




Architects typically do the following:

  • Meet with clients to determine objectives and requirements for structures
  • Give preliminary estimates on cost and construction time
  • Prepare structure specifications
  • Direct workers who prepare drawings and documents
  • Prepare scaled drawings, either with computer software or by hand
  • Prepare contract documents for building contractors
  • Manage construction contracts
  • Visit worksites to ensure that construction adheres to architectural plans
  • Seek new work by marketing and giving presentations

As construction continues, architects may visit building sites to ensure that contractors follow the design, adhere to the schedule, use the specified materials, and meet work-quality standards. The job is not complete until all construction is finished, required tests are conducted, and construction costs are paid. Architects may also help clients get construction bids, select contractors, and negotiate construction contracts.
