The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, for lifetime contribution to cinema, was instituted in his honour by the Government of India in 1969. The award is one of the most prestigious awards in Indian cinema and is the highest official recognition for film personalities in the country.
Best lyrics went to Muthu Ratna for Kannada film “March 22”. The winners in the language categories include “Hebettu Ramakka” in Kannada language. Vinod Khanna’s family members, who were here to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, conferred posthumously, at the 65th National Film Awards on Thursday, said it was a proud and emotional moment.
Actor Sridevi posthumously won the Best Actress Award for her role in Hindi film Mom while Bengali actor Riddhi Sen got the Best Actor award for Nagar Kirtan. The Best Feature Film award went to Assamese film Village Rockstars.
Vinod Khanna’s wife Kavita was accompanied by son and actor Akshaye at the Vigyan Bhawan here to receive the honour.
Ahead of the ceremony, Akshaye said: “It is very humbling as a son to be receiving this on his behalf. It’s a very proud and emotional moment for all of us.”
However an uncertainty gave birth to a dreadful controversy consequently only 11 National Film Awards were presented, as roughly 50 awardees skips event.
The controversy triggered a debate about whether the president should be present at all convocations, award ceremonies from the beginning to the end. Going by the Twitter handle of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president was scheduled to meet Supreme Court judge, Justice SA Bobde, and Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University, Prof SK Srivastava, on Thursday.
Manisha Koirala won the ‘Most versatile actress’ award. Whereas legendary Film Director, Rakesh Roshan won a Lifetime achievement award for contribution to the industry as an actor, producer and a director. Also, veteran actor, Farida Jalal won the Saraswatibai Dadasaheb Phalke Best actress (Lifetime) award.
The National Awards, which were announced in New Delhi, also posthumously awarded Vinod Khanna’s Chandni co-star Sridevi Best Actress, who drowned in a Dubai hotel bathroom in February.
Apart from Chandni, Vinod Khanna and Sridevi have also shared screen space in films like Pathar Ke Insan and Farishtay.
Sridevi’s family–husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Khushi and Janhvi– accepts the Best Actress Award for on the late actor’s behalf. “An artist always looks for an honourable honour and there cannot be a bigger honour than National Awards,” Boney Kapoor told DD News earlier in the day.
