Akshaya Tritiya falls during Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the month of Vaishakha. Akshaya Tritiya falling on a Rohini Nakshatra day with Wednesday is considered very auspicious.
One of the legends incorporated that on this day, as per Shiva Purana, on Akshaya Tritiya, Kuber was appointed the lord of treasures and cashier of Heaven by Lord Shiva. Moreover it is supposed that the sun and the moon become likewise dazzling on this celebratory day.
Pandavas were in exile in the forest without any resources and then sages visited them, Draupadi, at some point found it difficult to prepare food. At the moment Lord Krishna came to visit the Pandavas. Lord Krishna saw an empty pot in which Draupadi had cooked some rice in the morning. There was nothing but a single grain of rice was left in the pot. Lord Krishna ate that single grain, and at that time, for that day, whole universe was satiated and so the visiting sagas and saints retuen happily. Lord Krishna gave her with the Akshaya Patra, a vessel that could give unending supply of food every day. This day happened to be commemorated as Akshaya Tritiya every year.
Akshaya Tritiya is birthday of Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. It is Parasurama Jayanti. Also Ved Vyasa began reciting the Hindu epic Mahabharata to Ganesha on Akshaya Tritiya. Another legend states that river Ganges descended to earth on this day. As it is good day in Odisha, devotees begin yearly construction of chariots for the Puri Rath Yatra festivities.
1st Jain Tirthankar Rishabhanatha was born in Ayodhya and He was a great king. As per legends Lord Rishabhadeva meditated without any food and water for six months and after that set out to accept food (ahara). The citizens of his kingdom Ayodhya presented him jewels, elephants and costly clothing to honour their beloved king. No one realized that the king is now a monk and only looking for food to ensure that the monks who would come after him get food. As there was no alternative, he had to fast for one year until King Shreyansa understood his need and offered him sugarcane juice and consequently Rishabhadeva ended his fast. This was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.
How to celebrate
Fasting and worshiping Lord Vishnu with rice grains is customary way to celebrate. People buy gold, land, start new savings etc. Jains who completed fasting, end their fasts by consuming sugarcane, this ritual ending of a fast in Sanskrit language is called Parana. People seek blessing by distributing germinating gram and fruits.
