Group of Monuments at Hampi
The sober, ostentatious site of Hampi was the capital of the great Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar. Its amazingly affluent princes built Dravidian temples and palaces which won the respect of travellers between the 14th and 16th centuries. Conquered by the Muslim confederacy in 1565, the city was robed, broke and ruined over a period of six months before being abandoned, deserted and neglected as per whc, unesco.
Older than the Himalaya Mountains, the mountain sequence of the Western Ghats symbolizes geomorphic characteristics of huge significance with exceptional biophysical and ecological developments. The site’s high montane forest ecosystems influence the Indian monsoon weather pattern. Moderating the tropical climate of the region, the site presents one of the best examples of the monsoon system on the planet. It also has an exceptionally high level of biological diversity and endemism and is recognized as one of the world’s eight ‘hottest hotspots’ of biological diversity. The jungles of the site embrace a number of the finest representatives of non-equatorial tropical evergreen forests somewhere and are home to at least 325 internationally threatened flora, fauna, bird, amphibian, reptile and fish species.
Group of Monuments at Pattadakal
Pattadakal, in Karnataka, symbolizes the best moment of a diverse art which, in the 7th and 8th centuries under the Chalukya dynasty, accomplished a melodious combination of architectural forms from northern and southern India. A remarkable succession of nine Hindu temples, as well as a Jain sanctuary, can be seen there. One magnum opus from the group stands out – the Temple of Virupaksha, built c. 740 by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate her husband’s triumph over the kings from the South.
Every year on 18 April, ICOMOS commemorates the “International Day for Monuments and Sites”, whose enterprise was agreed by the 22nd UNESCO General Conference in 1983.
World Heritage is the collective richness of civilization. Shielding and maintaining this precious asset demands the combined hard work of the global village. This particular day offers a prospect to improve the community’s consciousness about the variety of artistic heritage and the hard work that are mandatory to guard and preserve it, as well as create awareness to its susceptibility
The most significant manner to rejoice World Heritage Day is to hunt out those locations near you that count as World Heritage Sites, and at least plan to visit them sometime.
